    Excellent post. For the first time in a decade I've just fired up my Roberts R861 (a rebadged Sangean 909) and quite quickly got annoyed with the 'chuffing'. Sounds like a steam train!
    I'll probably have a go at the mod you describe, but I also want to fit some better ceramic filters which I need to research first.
